See Our Katrina Recovery Progress....We've Come So Far, And Yet We've Just Begun:
Our Lady Academy (OLA) is the only all-female Catholic school in the state of Mississippi. Established in 1971 as a comprehensive college preparatory school, OLA serves young women in grades 7-12, with a student body of close to 300 students. OLA is on the beachfront property that was formerly St. Joseph Academy (SJA), also an all-girls school, which was founded in 1855 and closed in 1967, 4 years before OLA was founded. The mothers and grandmothers of many OLA students attended St. Joseph's Academy, and are part of the OLA tradition. OLA is staffed by the Sisters of Mercy and dedicated lay professionals. Strong collaboration between OLA and St. Stanislaus (the all-male Catholic school across the street) maximizes the religious, academic, and social opportunities for the students. OLA offers various extracurricular activities including ten sports and is the defending state champ in volleyball (the last two years) and soccer (the last four years). OLA qualifies as a 502c3 non-profit charitable (educational) organization. To read more about SJA and OLA history, please go to school history.
Hurricane Katrina Severe Damage
OLA suffered severe damage from Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. Please also take a look at our photo galleries to see the severity of our Hurricane Katrina damage. You can read Prinicipal Sr. Jackie's letter to get a feel for how overwhelming it was immediately after the storm.
Due to the hard work of many, OLA reopened just two months after Katrina (on November 1, 2005) with limited resources. For the remainder of the 2005-2006 school year, OLA shared facilities, faculty, and resources with St. Stanislaus, the all-boys school across the street who also sustained Katrina damage. Due to the generosity and hard work of many people, some of our furnishings/facilities have been repaired or refurbished in time to move classes and core activities back to OLA's campus for the 2006-2007 school year. We still share some programs with St. Stanislaus as we did prior to Hurricane Katrina, but we are now in a position to resume use of our facilities this year. In summary, we have some of the basics restored, but we still have a long way to go towards full recovery.
Your tax-deductible monetary donations
are still needed to continue the OLA all-girls education
tradition. We are the only all-girls school in the state
of Mississippi.
Thank you for your continued help and prayers.
